Raphael Varane, the 2018 World Cup winner with France, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender shared his decision on social media, confirming that while his playing career has come to an end, he will remain with Como in a non-playing role.
Varane, who joined the Italian club this season, was left out of their Serie A squad after suffering a knee injury in August. Reflecting on his new journey, he said, "A new life begins off the pitch... I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon."
A Glittering Career
Varane began his career at Lens in France before making a high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2011 at just 18 years old. During his time in Madrid, he won:
In 2021, he transferred to Manchester United, where he lifted the League Cup and FA Cup. However, injuries often disrupted his time at Old Trafford. After leaving United at the end of last season, Varane signed for Cesc Fabregas' Como, playing one Coppa Italia match before his knee injury.
Reflecting on his career, Varane said, "From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team... I have defended every badge with everything I have, and loved every minute of the journey."
International Glory
On the international stage, Varane made his debut for France in 2013, going on to earn 93 caps. The pinnacle of his international career came in 2018 when he played a key role in helping France win the World Cup, defeating Croatia 4-2 in the final. His last match for Les Bleus was the 2022 World Cup final, where France narrowly lost to Argentina on penalties.
"I have won more than I could have even dreamed of," Varane said. "But beyond the accolades and trophies, I am proud that no matter what, I have stuck to my principles of being sincere and have tried to leave everywhere better than I found it."
Legacy and Challenges
Varane’s retirement at 31 follows his decision to step away from international football at just 29, citing the intense physical and mental demands placed on top-level players. He has also raised concerns about the long-term effects of concussions on footballers.
Several former teammates paid tribute to Varane, with United's Bruno Fernandes saying, "It was a pleasure for all of us."
As Varane transitions into a new phase of his career at Como, football fans will remember him as a player who achieved remarkable success while maintaining his integrity and love for the game.
